So then two podcasts that date almost immediately, in so far as that they are topical. Last week, a show based around the furore at Sunderland, this week we look with heavily rose tinted specs at the club on Resonance FM’s doorstep, Miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii (llwall).
They’ve got themselves a Wembley appearance this weekend against NotEverton (or Wigan as everyone else but Chris Roberts calls them) so we thought we’d like to pay homage to the club, the surrounding area and have a look at what makes up the undeniable cult of Millwall FC.
We speak to Mark Baxter (@TheMumper) co-author of The Fashion Of Football about the Millwall Roar, the essence and style of the common or garden Lions fan, the undeniable romance of Walworth and Bermondsey, West Ham…
…and Jenny Agutter.
With Deano, we look at the History of a club that has actually, for somewhere so proud to be South London froo ahhhhnd froo, moved around quite a bit (Millwall’s actually north of the river on the Isle Of Dogs), we examine the strong links with its community (the club pioneered programs long before many others) and its industrial roots.
Chris Roberts proselytises about the area he has called home since he came to London…. bloody ages ago, and David Stubbs is equally complementary; it’s not often a club nails its political colours to the mast, but Millwall did in parking their Routemaster outside Lewisham Hospital in protest against its closure. We like that.
Anyway, from all at Cafe Calcio and Resonance 104.4FM (I know how much the rest of the station are so passionate about our local club) good luck at Wembley, hope you can make it to the final. After all, last time you did, Palace won the play-off final a week later so it’s a good omen.
